'From 12 March - 10 July 2011, the V&A will present a retrospective of the work of visionary Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto. Conceived as a site-specific installation with its core in Gallery 38 and small interventions throughout the V&A, Yamamoto’s menswear collections will be included in the display of his work for the first time. Each space will take its own meaning within the narrative of the exhibition which explores Yohji Yamamoto’s design world.

Follow exhibition curator, Ligaya Salazar, as she documents the evolution of the exhibition and offers an insight into the research, design and installation process.'

The second years and foundation had a meeting today just to discuss what we need to be thinking about between now and the next meeting.

Student Reps from all years - we've got a meeting on the 28th March at 9.00 - Fashion Lab

This year there will be 8 groups, they are:

Rail Management and Show Order: We're going to need 1 person per rail and 10 rails (These students won't be helping with the FMP production) We're going to need a lot more copies of the show order, and it's your responsibility to make sure everyone understands it. The 10 people in charge of rails will know each show inside out so they can help dressers.

Model Team: Everyone will be helping to try and find models, however only 2 people will be in charge of collating all the model information together (they won't be helping with FMP production) We need a MINIMUM of 15 male models, and 40 female.

Photography: Speak to Carl, maybe a photography student would like to use this at their FMP? We also need 4 fashion students (these students will be still be helping with FMP production)

Catalogue: Two HND Graphic students and 3 Fashion students (Fashion students won't be helping with FMP production)

Raffle/Fiver fund: 2 students in charge. Those students who don't put any money into the fiver fund will NOT be getting tickets for the end of year show and will definitely not be selected for the VIP show.

Hair and Make up: Teachers try and contact professional make up brands - sponsorship? James Watt hair and make up department. 8 Fashion students; fashion students you need to do test shots and collect imagery of how you might want it to look. Suggestion that hair and makeup people have ameeting at James Watt- Emily to discuss this with Head of School - Louise on Friday.

Tshirts: 2 students - designing the print that will go onto our tshirts - you'll also be helping with FMP production.- But will need two days to print Tshirts to be handed in before half term.

Music: 2 students - again you'll be helping with FMP production.

You all need to start thinking of possible themes behind the show as models will be split into two sets. Last year we did 'Saints and Sinners' the hair, make up and shoes were all styled towards this theme.

Any questions, write them down - and we'll cover it in the meeting.

"First an image for manipulation has to be selected and sometimes this is what takes most of my time. Going into a project I often have a very fixed idea of what I want to work with: finding the image with the right background, foreground, resolution, and content can take all day sometimes! I usually search Google images for sources, or alternatively I scan images that myself or my contacts have.

When I have selected the right image to use, I crop and print this at various sizes and edits on various sizes of paper. Working like this, the only limitation is the resolution of the source image. I am currently planning to do some giant paste up art works on buildings and walls, and this requires just the same formula but slightly tweaked...

Originally I would cut up perhaps two or three images or work from a small handful of duplicates. But with time my technique has developed and now I need more! This is just technique development - like how a young painter might begin work with just a few colours of poster paints and one large brush, and years later they are working with multiple colours and honed techniques to blend and create with all the experiences they have learned through practice and exploring their medium.

“After the shoot and the collage process we did with Robbie, I wanted to bring a movement to those fixed images. Working on a collage is like painting but using scissors and a cutter. I cut the lines, I build shapes on paper and faces. The video is trying to reflect the whole process, from the emotion you got while shooting a model to what I’m searching for underneath, following features. You have to hitch the skin to find sensitivity”.

I have to do a presentation tomorrow about our college and work so i need as much images and stuff as you can find. The third season of contemporary art at 6 Burlington Gardens examines how artists and designers use clothing as a mechanism to communicate and reveal elements of our identity.

The exhibition contains work by 30 emerging as well as established international contemporary practitioners including Marina Abramović, Acconci Studio, Azra Akšamija, Maja Bajevic, Handan Börüteçene, Hussein Chalayan, Alicia Framis, Meschac Gaba, Marie-Ange Guilleminot, Andreas Gursky, Mella Jaarsma, Kimsooja, Claudia Losi, Susie MacMurray, Marcello Maloberti, La Maison Martin Margiela, Alexander McQueen, Yoko Ono, Maria Papadimitriou, Grayson Perry, Dai Rees, Katerina šedá, Cindy Sherman, Yinka Shonibare, Helen Storey, Rosemarie Trockel, Sharif Waked, Gillian Wearing RA, Yohji Yamamoto and Andrea Zittel.

New work by Yinka Shonibare and Hussein Chalayan, commissioned especially for Aware by London College of Fashion and the Royal Academy of Arts, is on display. Hussein Chalayan presents a new dress inspired by the 300 year old Japanese tradition of Bunraku puppet theatre while Yinka Shonibare has worked with bespoke tailor Chris Stevens to create 18 designs based on 19th-century children’s dress assembled to form a wall mural.

Aware is divided into four sections. Storytelling acknowledges the role of clothing in the representation of personal and cultural history. Grayson Perry’s Artist’s Robe, 2004, an elaborate, appliquéd coat made of a patchwork of luxurious fabrics, comments on the figure and status of the artist in the world today.

Building covers the concept of clothing being used as a form of protection and the notion of carrying one’s own shelter, referencing the nomadic, portable nature of modern life. On display is Shelter Me 1, 2005 by Mella Jaarsma who in her work parallels garment and architectural constructions. Jaarsma defines shelter as the minimal construction needed for protection, not yet the shape of a house, but directly related to the proportions of the human body.

Belonging and Confronting examines ideas of nationality as well as displacement and political and social confrontation, recognizing the tensions associated with the assimilation of new cultures and traditions. In Palestinian artist Sharif Waked’s video installation, Chic Point, 2003, the contradictory interpretations of revealing flesh as a fashion prerogative or as a humiliation juxtapose two worlds, one of high fashion and the other of semi-imprisonment.

The importance of Performance in the presentation of fashion and clothing, and in highlighting the roles that we play in our daily life, is explored in the final section. It features film footage of Yoko Ono’s performance of Cut Piece at Carnegie Recital Hall, New York in 1965, for which the artist invited the public to cut strips from her clothing. While the scraps of fabric fall to the floor, the unveiling of the female body suggests the total destruction of the barriers imposed by convention.

Pioneer photographer, forefather of cinema, showman, murderer - Eadweard Muybridge was a Victorian enigma. He was born and died in Kingston upon Thames, but did his most famous work in California - freezing time and starting it up again, so that for the first time people could see how a racing horse's legs moved. He went on to animate the movements of naked ladies, wrestlers, athletes, elephants, cockatoos and his own naked body, projecting his images publicly with a machine he invented and astounding audiences worldwide with the first flickerings of cinema. Alan Yentob follows in Muybridge's footsteps as he makes - and often changes - his name, and sets off to kill his young wife's lover. With Andy Serkis as Muybridge.

The Beauty of Diagrams:Vitruvian man

A series in which mathematician Marcus du Sautoy explores the stories behind some of the most familiar scientific diagrams.

He looks at Leonardo da Vinci's world-famous diagram of the perfect human body, which has many layers from anatomy to architecture, and defines our species like no other drawing before or since. The Vitruvian Man, drawn in the 1480s when he was living and working in Milan, has become one of the most famous images in the world. Leonardo's drawings form a vast body of work, covering every imaginable subject in spectacular detail: from feet, skulls and hands to muscles and sinews; from hearts and lungs to buildings, bridges and flying machines.

Vitruvian Man perfectly synthesises Leonardo's passions for anatomy, for the mechanics of the human body and for geometry. It is also full of surprises, illustrating an ancient architectural riddle set out 1,500 years earlier by the classical writer Vitruvius about the relative proportions of buildings and men; a riddle that, even today, still fascinates and beguiles experts and viewers alike.

Christopher Kane has done a collection based on The queen mother and Queen Margaret based on her 'rebelious' side. Although he's used sorbet shades i think from a textile side the collection is inspiring and shows a more 'fashion' side of the brief :).

Fashion Design Competition

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for Fashion:Lab*BETA students: design a dress to promote the launch of NEWM new UV security ticket.

The Brief:

Design a dress from bus tickets to promote the release of a new UV bus ticket on NEWM. When designing you should consider the materials available to you – samples of which will be available to you from Monday 27^th September in the Fashion:Lab. Your client has also asked you to consider the following key words when designing – Elaborate, Romantic, Whimsical, Beautiful; the opposite of bus travel!

Deliverables:

A3 Concept Board that includes research, samples of detailing, paper manipulation and initial ideas.

A3 Design Board to include front and back views of your dress design.

DEADLINE All work to be submitted to Fashion:Lab by 4.30pm on Friday 8^th October

Designs will be judged by a team from NEWM on Monday 11^th October 9am.

The winning designer will help produce the dress with a small team of Fashion:Lab students, you will also be invited to attend the professional photo-shoot and help style your dress on the model. This campaign is scheduled to be used for all advertising and media throughout the West Midlands!!

As well having your dress publicised through the media, the winner will receive one year of unlimited travel with National Express West Midlands.

This is a fantastic opportunity, and something that will look great on your personal statements and in your portfolios for university.

Susie MacMurray's work encompasses drawing, sculpture and architectural installations. A former classical musician, she retrained as an artist, graduating with an MA in Fine Art in 2001. She now has an international exhibition profile and shows regularly in the USA and Europe as well as the UK.

An engagement with materials is central to MacMurray's practice. Her role is one of alchemist: combining material, form and context in deceptively simple ways to stimulate associations within the viewers' minds and to elicit nuanced meanings.

Working in installation and sculpture she has gained a reputation for site-specific interventions in historic spaces. Her work frequently references the history of a space and seeks to merge the particularities of that history, the specifics of site, and the inherent references attached to materials in an attempt to gain insight into the relationship between place and people.

Drawing is an important part of MacMurray's practice. In addition to her large scale pen & ink work she extends the possibilities of making drawings using unconventional materials including rubber tubing, hair and wax. She also makes pen & ink drawings on a more intimate scale and still produces small editions of her sculptural wall pieces for private commissions.

The architect and critic Michael Sorkin is interested in animal forms because they challenge architectural conventions. Whereas buildings are often symmetrical and almost always static, a moving animal is neither of these things. Projects such as the Beached Houses shown here explore this apparently fundamental difference. The three houses, called Ray, Carp and Slug, have a similar arrangement of rooms on two floors. They are based on animals that are 'symmetrical but only until they wiggle'. 'Our effort is to measure the space between the fish and the wiggle', says Sorkin, 'This is the study of a lifetime.'

If your struggling with royal blue as a subject here’s a few little idea that may set the ball rolling. At the exhibition at Kensington I really loved the Boudicca armour pieces hanging from the chandeliers and armour was something I wanted too look into.
I also really liked the room of war and play thought this as an idea would be really interesting too look into, the aspects of power and power dressing as well as war as a subject and how much control an individual in a position of such high power such as the queen can take a whole country to war where peoples lives are at risk and how in contrast in this day and age our own queen is arguably a figure head who brings in tourism and puts her face on money (perhaps look at making things from money).
I also wanted to look more at individual members of royalty like King Henry the 8th because so many of them had such strange lives which could be incorporated into a garment as well as things like royal furniture like chandeliers and thrones could be used for inspiration.
Another thing is anarchy and things like the ‘sex pistols’ and there song ‘god save the queen’ and Vivienne Westwoods orb logo represents her own issues with royalty and reflects the crown jewels. Research anything because you never know what its going to bring up and how this might inspire you!

Hello all!

Just an update for anyone who is thinking of applying to AMFI for next year.
Basically the system last year was that you would apply in April, however I've just received news that the system has changed and that there is an open day on November 13th and you will be expected to apply by the 15th December! Scary stuff.
This is good though, because interviews will take place in February so you may even know whether it's good/bad news before you go to any on the interview in the UK.

Just thought I'd let people know, if they didn't know already. Lots to sort out!

Hussain Chalayan - 3 week exhibition!

From 8 September to 2 October 2010 Hussein Chalayan’s new installation “”I Am Sad Leyla (Üygünüm Leyla)” will be exhibited at Lisson Gallery, 29 Bell Street in London.

Chalayan says “My approach has always been interdisciplinary; the new work is an extension of this. There is a certain freedom to working in an art context that has allowed me to further explore the ideas that underpin my work.”

The new installation explores music as a cultural form, creating a “disembodied experience” of a performance of a traditional Turkish folk composition by Sertab Erener, one of Turkey’s most successful female singers, accompanied by an Ottoman orchestra. The installation is made up of a nuanced combination of audio, film, sculpture and musical notation. Here Hussein examines the experience of music as layered, exploring both the sounds created by different instruments, and the diverse cultural influences on the composition, which include Persian poetry and Greek orthodox chanting.

The project has emerged from a longstanding dialogue between the designer and Lisson Gallery’s Curatorial Director Greg Hilty who says: “Hussein Chalayan is rightly celebrated not just for his fashion but as one of London’s leading innovators in visual culture. His sensitive play with the history and poetic potential of wide-ranging cultural forms make him a natural fit for Lisson’s programme of exhibitions.”

Following needs to be ready for when you come back

1. Comprehensive research of the subject Royality (European only)
2. Collection of lots of different LUXORY fabrics - do your research get samples from companies all over the UK. ie not Fancy Silks!!
3. Collection of lots of trims, matt sequins, beads, brocade, ribbons etc (all blue)
4 Research of single colour collections
5. Comprehensive research of collars cuffs and corsets - how were they made? what was the significance of them? which fabrics were used? try to look at the history of them in Royality.
6. Comprehensive research of costume - details, fabrics etc... You should also decide on which bit of royality you want to think about basing your garment on - remember the surface pattern has to carry narrative - reference Grayson Perry tapestrys and pots, Hussain Chalayan.

You are making a contemporary garment that is for the catwalk NOT COSTUME!!

You will work on designs a lot when you come back but you are welcome to start now if you like, the RESEARCH, FABRIC AND TRIMMINGS are the most important aspects over the holidays.

Ps No shiny sequins, unless you plan to melt them!
